🕊️ To Be Like a Child - The Freedom of Total Reliance
📖 Matthew 18:2–4 (NIV)
“He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’”
In the last devotional, we established a foundational truth: we are not our own. We were bought at a price.
But if we are not our own… whose responsibility are we?
Jesus answers that question by pointing to a child.
Not innocence alone.
Not immaturity.
Dependence.
🌿 He Called. The Child Came.
Jesus called a little child to Him.
The child was not forced.
Not recruited.
Not pressured.
And here is what we must not overlook:
The child had no idea why he was being called.
He did not know he would be placed before grown men.
He did not know he would become a Kingdom illustration.
He simply responded.
That is trust.
He trusted that whatever happened next, he would be safe. He would be cared for. He would be okay.
That is obedience without explanation.
Adults want context.
Children trust the character of the One calling them.
👑 The Lowly Position
Jesus said:
“Whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest…”
That is meekness.
To have power — but choose restraint.
To have free will — but surrender it.
To be capable — but choose obedience.
Luke 9:46–48 confirms it. When the disciples argued about greatness, Jesus placed a child beside Him and said:
“He who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
The greatest in the Kingdom are not the most self-sufficient.
They are the most surrendered.
🌳 Return to the Original Design
From the beginning, humanity was designed for dependence.
Before Adam ever opened his eyes, provision was already prepared. 🌿
The garden was planted.
The rivers were flowing.
The trees were grown.
Adam did not build Eden.
He was placed in it.
Provision preceded performance.
God walked with them.
Talked with them.
Fellowshipped with them.
They did not know life outside of Him.
Dependence was not weakness.
It was design.
The fall introduced autonomy — “You will be like God.”
Sin separates us from God — not because He moves, but because we do (Isaiah 59:2). Independence fractures intimacy.
💔 Return Requires Repentance
Joel 2:12 says:
“Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
Return implies distance.
Repentance is relational realignment.
It is not groveling for acceptance.
It is turning back.
Like a child who disobeys, feels grief, and runs back — not because they fear rejection, but because they value the relationship.
Godly sorrow produces repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10).
Conviction draws us back.
Condemnation pushes away (Romans 8:1).
True repentance leads to reunion.
🕊️ Return Is Met With Restoration
In Luke 15:11–31, the prodigal son chose independence. He left his father’s covering.
When he came to himself, he returned.
And while he was still a long way off, the father saw him and ran.
Return was not met with interrogation.
It was met with compassion.
It was met with embrace.
It was met with restoration.
Ring. Robe. Sandals. Celebration.
The father did not downgrade him.
He restored him.
That is how God receives us when we truly repent.
❤️ Love Makes It Safe to Return
1 Corinthians 13 describes love:
Love is patient.
Love is kind.
It is not easily angered.
It keeps no record of wrongs.
If God is love, then this is who receives us.
Repentance is safe because His love is steady.
🌿 Stillness Is Intentional
Stillness is not inactivity.
It is internal quiet — and internal quiet requires intentionality.
Whether it is early mornings, prayer walks, worship, or journaling, we must choose to make time for God. Our schedules may differ, but our pursuit cannot be casual.
Fasting is a spiritual discipline that every believer must embrace. Jesus did not say “if you fast,” but “when you fast” (Matthew 6:16).
But fasting is more than discipline — it is return.
When we deny the flesh and replace noise with presence, we hear Him more clearly.
God has not stopped speaking. He does not change (Malachi 3:6). His voice does not fluctuate.
Rest positions us to hear.
And faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17).
👑 Surrender → Rest → Commission
Surrender your entire life to Him.
Not pieces.
Not portions.
Not future plans with fine print.
All of it.
This is not extreme Christianity.
It is a return to original design.
When we surrender fully, we rest deeply.
When we rest, we hear clearly.
When we hear clearly, the Holy Spirit empowers obedience (Acts 1:8).
Philippians 1:6 assures us:
“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion…”
The One who called you is the One who keeps you.
🕊️ A Prayer to Be Spoken: Return and Restoration
Father God,
I come to You honestly.
I admit that I have tried to do things my own way. I have stepped into self-sufficiency. I have tried to manage, control, and carry what was never mine to carry — and I am truly sorry.
It has not worked.
It never truly worked.
I confess that I have walked in independence instead of dependence. I have relied on my own understanding instead of fully trusting You.
Forgive me, in Jesus’ name.
Your Word says that if I confess my sins, You are faithful and just to forgive me and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). I believe that.
I return to You with all my heart.
I lay down striving.
I lay down control.
I lay down fear.
I lay down pride.
I surrender my entire life to You — not pieces, not portions, not plans with fine print. All of it.
Restore me to right standing with You.
Restore intimacy.
Restore clarity.
Help me to perceive the new thing You are doing.
Create in me a clean heart, O God (Psalm 51:10). Renew a right spirit within me.
Teach me to depend on You fully — in every way, in every area of my life.
Quiet my heart so I can hear You clearly. Help me to obey quickly, even when I do not understand. Empower me by Your Holy Spirit to do Your will — not mine.
I no longer want to live outside of Your covering.
I want to walk with You.
I want to know You.
I want to do Your will.
I want to seek Your kingdom and Your righteousness, in Jesus’ name.
Thank You for receiving me.
Thank You for restoring me.
Thank You for being patient, kind, longsuffering, and faithful.
I am Yours.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen. 🕊️
